Executive Branch
The President and Chief of State: Nursultan Nazarbayez
- Main role is to represent Kazakhstan in international relations
- Handles domestic and Foreign Policy disputes
- Elected by Plurality (doesn't have to be a 51% majority, they only have to have the most votes)
- Serves a 5 year term
- Supervises and organizes the basic government
- Appointed by the President and Parliment must approve before they are appointed
- The Prime Ministers term is based on the description of the president
Judicial Branch
The police, court and prison system is still very closely related to the Soviet-era practices. Most of the changes have been to commercial business. They have opened up to allow for more international trading.
Supreme Courts

- These courts are the top of the three courts (regional, city, and district)
- The Supreme Judicial Council recommends potential judges to the president who submits them to the senate, who votes to confirm the recommendations
- The amount of time in service is determined by the president
Legislative Branch
Parliament consists of two houses the Senate and the Mazhilis. Both of the houses adopt laws, discuss budgets, ratify and denounce treaties, establish procedures and resolve administration issues and territory divisions. Any proposed bills are passed when there is a 2/3 majority in Majilis, it is then sent to the Senate to consider. If there is a 2/3 majority in the senate as well then the bill is sent to the president for his signature. If it is rejected it is sent back to the Majilis and the senate for another 2/3 majority vote.

- 15 members appointed by the president and 32 members indirectly elected by the regular .
- Serve 6 year terms
- 107 members, 98 elected and 9 are selected to represent the minorities in the countries.
- Serve 5 year terms
- Local executives in each of the 14 regions of the country
- serve 2 year terms through direct elections
- They are in charge of social issues who are supervised by the Akims (regional prefects appointed by the president)
